After being closed for a Month, Gyms will be re-opening In Texas in. However, what kinds of rules have the Governor Abbot put in place for gyms to make them safe? On May 5th 2020, Greg Abbott surprised us Cinco de mayo gift! FREE tacos for everybody!!!
FREE, Tacos, Free Tacos, free tacos!
I am kidding but that would be sweet!
About Announced that gyms in Texas would be allowed to reopen on May 18th, 2020. It’s also worth pointing out that hair salons and nail salons will be allowed to re-open on May 8th, exactly 10 days before gyms can reopen. It’s almost as if he’s giving Instagram fitness models a chance to get their hair and nails done before going back to the gym to take an endless number of selfies!

In that same press conference, Governors Abbot gave gyms some rules that need to follow once they open up, he said
“ Gyms can operate at 25% capacity and that showers and locker rooms remain closed. Equipment must be disinfected between each use and customers are advised to wear gloves that cover their hands and fingers.” – Greg ABOTT
You are probably wondering, but what about masks? Actually, it was never mandatory for us to wear masks, it was just strongly advised to do so because the entire scientific health community says it lowers the chances of transmitting or receiving the coronavirus. So, you don’t have to… but you really should. Better safe than sorry.
Also, some gyms might require people to wear masks. I haven’t heard any gyms saying if they will or won’t however, other private companies such as HEB and Cost Co have made it mandatory for both employees and customers to wear a mask at their locations. Customers who refuse to wear masks will be asked to leave.
Speaking of wearing masks to the gym. Do you remember a couple of years ago when people wearing oxygen deprivation masks to cardio in the gym? Whatever happened that? I used to laugh at that, but it turns out those guys were just ahead of their time!
Gyms are allowed to open May 18th but will all gyms open up? Will all gym owners feel that is safe for their gyms to reopen in Texas. We will see. For Example, Georgia allowed gym reopen over a week ago but Harvey Spevak the, CEO of Equinox gyms decided not to open up their Georgia locations because their scientific sources said it just wasn’t safe yet. LA Fitness followed in their footsteps and didn’t open either. So, will large commercial gyms do the same thing here in Texas? At this moment we simply don’t know yet but we will find out soon.
Lastly, what will gyms do to prevent the spread of the Corona Virus in their facilities? I’m actually making a separate video right now called, What Will Gyms Look Like in May of 2020. Watch out for that video. It should be out in the next day or two.
But just to sum it up for you, gyms are going to look and feel different.
All of the major commercial gyms such as La Fitness, Golds Gym, and Equinox have written new guidelines for how their gyms should operate. They will be practicing strict social distancing measures. Several of them plan to space out workout equipment or at the very least clean off weightlifting in between usage of said equipment.
They will also plan on having stickers on the ground to show people where to stand 6 feet apart from each other while working out. I would imagine these stickers would be similar to kinds of stickers and sings you see at HEB and Walmart.
It’s going to be interesting to see how well these companies adapt to these new procedures. I’m also hoping that people adopt the new protocols that gyms are being put into place.
Now, I am a gym owner, I own Total Body Training which is actually a workout studio so things are a little different here. Our population isn’t as big as a Gold’s Gym but there are still risks involved with us opening back which is exactly why we will be taking upping our cleaning standards and practicing social distancing in our facility.
In addition to that, we will be continuing to offer both FREE Workouts you can do from home and Premium Live online workout classes. We are actually offering two levels of services now. We have our HIIT Body Weight only classes and we have top service which is our weightlifting from classes. For more on this topic click the link in the description section to the video to learn more.
