The first time I went into a gym was in college and I completely sucked! I was horrible, my form was ugly, and I remember looking around at the college gym and feeling shitty about the whole situation. Looking back, I wish someone would have told me its OK to suck at shit and it’s part of the process.
It takes time to get good at anything. When you first start, there is going to be a steep learning curve. Especially when you aren’t a ‘fitness’ type or accustomed to the gym culture. There is definitely a learning curve for everyone and what people don’t see is that it takes a lot of time and dedication for a person to get good at something. Take for example trigonometry, you don’t just walk in and get the formulas right away… you start in kindergarten and build a strong math foundation. The same is true with any fitness journey.
Remember, everyone starts with somewhere. It’s about being okay with the process of growing and learning, embrace the suck. As we start to get older, we forget what it’s like being a beginner and don’t like the idea of sucking at things. This is where you’ll have to eat a piece of humble pie and embrace the suck.
I had a client a long time ago who after each missed lift, they vocalized that they wanted to give up. It always boggled my mind, because everything takes practice. If you’re expecting way too much from yourself, cut yourself some slack and work towards your goals… don’t just give up if you encounter a set back!
My beginners always ask me, “How long until I can do that? They make it look so easy!” For weight training, there’s not one straight path. Sometimes you will have setbacks with major movements. There’s no way for me to tell any of my clients a deadline on when they will be able to deadlift 200lbs. In fact, you should give yourself a break and remember you’re learning! I encourage you to embrace the learning part of fitness and not just admire the end results.
Getting good at weight lifting takes time and dedication. Ignore everyone else, your process is yours and try to stay humble and willing to learn. And remember: it’s okay to suck at shit; in fact it’s part of the process
Yo! I’m not a licensed therapist or Doctor, I just talk about real shit that’s happened to my clients and me.
