Every now and then I go to a conventional gym to lift weights and I notice everyoneis on their technology taking a selfie, jamming out to music, or watching TV. There’s nothing wrong with this, but find out how being mindful in the gym will help you with your gains.

People are endlessly distracted in the gym and life… I’m all for technology.  Where we run into a slight problem is if the technology is prohibiting us from being mindful in the gym and eating.

There are pro’s and con’s to technology in the gym. I’m here to help you navigate the pro’s of technology and also see the other side of how mindfulness can help you grow in life and in your gains!

So, you have a camera and you watch online workouts, you take video of yourself to critique form, you can take photos of your gains. These are all great, but here are some cons.  If you are brining your phone with you and you decide to watch videos between sets, you aren’t paying attention to your body, you are answering phone calls, I’ve seen people completely distracted during their sets.   If you aren’t paying attention to your body during sets you won’t improve.  The other thing I see is ‘glory lifting’ for the sake of getting attention of social media on days you shouldn’t be.  Maybe you are on a training cycle and try to compete with your BFF’s squats and wreck your training cycle because you maxed out too soon.  There is nothing wrong with wanting to feel some validation from social media, but if you happiness relies on this then you will be disappointed.  There is always someone who looks hotter or squats more than you.

Here are some tips and tricks to more mindful lifting.

  • Use your phone less & for things you actuallyneed.
  • Don’t talk during your sets.
  • Take time in between your sets to review the work you need to do.

If you need your phone in the gym, then rest in the fact that you are available for emergencies.  If you’re answering messages in between your sets about general life, you may be distracted.  I’m not here to say you need to throw away your phones, but what I am suggesting we are using them as tools and staying mindful and present.
