And many people have been singing here praise for this accomplishment. However, some people who consider themselves to be body positive and or fat acceptant are disappointed in Adele. Many of them see this as a betrayal of body positivity and fat acceptance. So, today we are answering the question,
What exactly happened? Why are people upset? Can you be body positive while trying to lose weight? And is Adele’s weight loss a betrayal of body positivity?

What Happened?
On May 5th 2020 Adele Broke the internet when she posted a photo of herself on her birthday.
The photo wasn’t particularly risqué or sexy no what got people was the fact that Adele has a lost a significant amount of weight. How much weight did she lose? Well, we don’t really know because Adele’s didn’t to tell us. In fact, she didn’t even mention her weight loss. The description section of her Instagram photo said the following
“Thank you for the birthday love. I hope you’re all staying safe and sane during this crazy time.
I’d like to thank all of our first responder’s and essential workers who are keeping us safe while risking their lives! You are truly our angels ♥️
2020 okay bye thanks x” – Adele
See what she did there she said zilch, nothing, nada about her weight loss. Which left tabloids losing their minds trying to decide how much weight did she lose? What kind of diet did she use? Did she have weight loss surgery? Is this her post-divorce revenge body? We love you Adele why won’t tell us YOUR WEIGHT LOST STORY!!!!
The media and people have done a great job of sensationalizing this. Which it’s funny watching the internet lose their shit over this but on the other side I would imagine that it’s not fun to hear millions of people talking about your body. That must be hard and all that isn’t really the worst of but I’m going to come back to that.
The truth is we don’t know the answers to any of these questions and there aren’t really any of our business anyway. It’s entirely up to Adele as to whether or not she wants to talk about Adele’s weight loss. She doesn’t owe us anything. She makes god damn beautiful music and has the voice of an angel. What more do we want from her people?
The fact that Adele hasn’t been super public about her weight loss journey shouldn’t come as a surprise to us. Adele isn’t super active on social media. She also doesn’t seem to care much about selling her body. In Adele’s Own Words “I don’t make music for eyes, I make music for ears.” – Adele in a Rolling Stone Article
(Not that there’s anything wrong with selling your body. Adele didn’t mean as a slight to other pop stars such as Lady Gaga and Queen B, Beyoncé )
Many people congratulated Adele on weight loss. Losing weight, when done correctly, is an accomplishment, And We don’t know how she did so it’s not fair for us to speculate if she or didn’t do it a healthy way. Either way, not everybody was down with Adele’s weight loss. Some people took this as an opportunity to bash Adele’s transformation.
Some people said that she looked uglier skinny then she did when she was fat. Others said that her face was prettier before the weight loss, others went as accusing her of potentially having anorexia.
What do I think?
Before I give my opinion, I would like to now what y’all think? Here’s a question: “ Is complementing Adele for her weight loss a bad thing or a good thing? Let me know down in the comments below.
What do you think?
I use to be overweight and I dealt with body image issues because of that. I also started losing my hair like 13 so I got picked on for that growing up. So, I’m coming to you as a person who understands what it’s like to be put down for your body.
I think that there is no doubt that society places unfair expectations on women with regard to their bodies. For more on this topic I would read the Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf. It’s a phenomenal book about beauty standards. I firmly believe that beauty standards contribute to a lot of societal issues, people that are considered less conventionally attractive, and Fat people are less likely to be hired for a job and typically make less money. That is a problem because your ability to do a job, especially the kinds of jobs we do nowadays which are mostly computer-based, has nothing to do with your weight. Your competence as a person has nothing to do with your weight, yet, overweight people and fat people have for years been made to feel less than. They have been put down or made fun.
The way that the tabloids talk about people’s bodies is disgusting. We just love to talk about celebrities’ weight, Just think of Vin Diesel or any other actor that you see just hanging out with their families in between making movies. The get thrown under the bus for gaining a couple of pounds, I think that conversation needs stop because it does reinforce a negative way of talking about people’s bodies and that does effects how people treat people who are fat and that does affect how those people feel about themselves. In that regard I am body positive. I do believe that you should love yourself despite your weight.
There are various people who claim to be body positive and some of those people believe that you can be healthy at any weight and losing weight is inherently wrong. This is where I don’t agree with all people who claim to be body positive. You simply can’t be healthy at any weight. The science is clear about this. Obesity is on the rise and it is linked with all sorts of health issues. And sure you can overweight and be healthy but not forever. Eventually, it will catch up with you.
I’ve never been obese, I was just fat and chunky, so for more on this topic, I would turn to Obese to Beast YouTube channel. He was obese and He has a realistic and healthy way of talking about weight loss. He actually made a video about Adele’s weight loss Which I think you should check out. I’ve also posted links to information from the CDC and another place that has done the research about obesity and its’s link to preventable health issues.
Can you be body positive but also want to lose weight or modify your body. Casey Ho the founder Blogilates made a video called, The Complicated World of Body Positivity (a mini-documentary) In this video Casey interviewed the founder of the Body Positive, Connie Sobczak, and she asked what she thought, Connie Said the following,
“Can we want to lose weight and be body positive? Yes, of course, anybody watching this just think about what you want in life and what your purpose is.”
– Connie Sobczak
So, in her words she is fine with it. There are other voices in that movement and other people who would consider themselves to be fat acceptant and there probably would say that that is fatphobic and there are various opinions within the world of body positivity but I agree with Connie’s opinion.
The final question is, Is Adele’s weight loss a betrayal of body positivity? No, it’s not because she is trashing people who are overweight she hasn’t even said anything about her own weight loss. It don’t think it matters much to her.
Look I empathize with fat people because the reason they feel betrayed is that for them Adele represented fat people. Then she represented the idea that you could be an amazing successful person and still be fat. And you can be extremely talented, smart and beautiful. She represented one of those few fat people who broke through as a pop despite all the biases that our society against overweight people. I 100 % get that.
What’s also true is that Adele’s body is Adele’s body and if she chose to change it then its really none of our business and as long as she doesn’t start promoting crash diets or belittling fat people then it’s not fair to upset with her. It’s not fair to her and her body. So, instead of trashing her let’s support her and her decision.
