Today’s episode is brought to you by carbs: Ashton loves pasta and doctors up a Ramen like no one else.
I sat down with Ashton Rouska to talk about how he got into lifting, where his journey has taken him and what he’s doing now.
The first time I ever saw Ashton was when I was shown a video of him deadlifting 765#’s, he was super excited and pumped about it. About a month later, I saw him at the Naturally Fit Games in Austin where he CRUSHED the junior records.
Ashton started lifting at age 13 and now he is the captain of the UTSA power lifting team. He attributes his physique to genetics, training, and how you feel. Diet and sleep patterns are super important to recovery and maximizing your potential. Sleep, diet (well I eat a lot of protein and carbs), and I train “power-building” style. My training is alwayscentered around power lifting, but my accessories focus on smaller muscles.
Ashton talks about his confidence and competency of power lifting and how he built up to be the person he is today. As he continued to train and break records, it was a critical moment in his journey. He really believes there is a therapeutic aspect to training for any sport or activity. Personally, his confidence increased through training and dedication.
We talk about not worrying about not chasing numbers, you may be surprised if you just focus on just training. It’s not always about the number, its about focusing on training and trusting your coach. Ashton trusted the process and those who came before him and that continues to impact his training in a positive light. We aren’t saying don’t have goals; we are saying it may be self-defeating if you focus just on that number. Your mentality is really important for any type of training.
Listen to Ashton’s unique perspective on power lifting, his journey to success, and how he’s gained confidence through bar therapy.
Yo! I’m not a licensed therapist, I just talk about real shit that’s happened to my clients and me.
