Joseph Pena is a truly incredible athlete. He holds numerous powerlifting state records in the squat and total. Including: a THSPA record squat at 1025 Lbs. and a total Record (squat, bench, and deadlift) at 2175 lbs. He currently holds the national Raw Squat Record in the USA Powerlifting and the International Powerlifting Federation – IPF for squat at 854Lbs.
We sit down and discuss the differences between strength training and power lifting, how Joseph started his journey, and where he wants to go!
Joseph started strength training at age 8 and helped him get to where he is today. Joseph talks about how he started with a 15-pound bar and worked his way to national records. Right now, he uses a modified Texas method, but still uses the proven strength methods he grew up with. His training plan continues to modify and grow in order to continue to push him to lift heavier.
There are several power lifting programs and methodology. We don’t go into detail, but we touch on the basics of each methodology for more comprehensive idea of how Joseph trains. Starting strength is one of the few methods that have Doctor’s on staff in order to build strength. They use a lot of medical terms and insight on how the body works and reacts to lifting.
