Real life: I set a goal to run a marathon; it was something I really wanted to do and was able to complete the marathon and get that t-shirt & a sweet medal. I remember being at a cookie-cutter gym wearing my marathon t-shirt. People I’ve never met would come up to me and say things like: “Damn you look skinny!” “Can a trainer be as skinny as you?” “What are you doing all this running stuff for?” “You’re going to lose your gains.” I remember thinking to myself, “Who are YOU to critique my fitness goals?” and that’s what inspired me to discuss this topic.
Everyone has had or dealt with haters in various forms, maybe you’re one of the super lucky people who’ve never dealt with haters (if this is you, contact me about interviewing). Haters can be anyone, from complete strangers to those closest to you.
Typically, most haters are super close to you and dislike how you are training or general fitness goals. Why is that Jean Carlos? Why does my best friend roll her eyes every time I go to the gym??
There are a few reasons I believe haters hate on your fitness goals. Through training my clients and constantly challenging my physique, I’ve learned a few things about haters.
Haters typically have the following mindsets that cause them to dismiss your fitness goals. The hater is jealous of what you have and may want your success. They don’t like seeing change, especially when people close to them are doing new and different things. You accomplishing your fitness goals are a reminder that they’ve failed at their own fitness goals. Perhaps they are reflecting their self-image onto your love of strength training. Your progress may make others feel uncomfortable, because they are always comparing themselves to you.
I have a client who was able to lift a significant amount of weight and the question was asked, “Is it really healthy to lift that much weight?” Instead of celebrating the accomplishment, the simple statement managed to overshadow the accomplishment. Sometimes it’s best to keep your comments to yourself or ask your trainer in private.
If you are the annoying hater… take a moment to reflect on WHY you are hating.
Haters develop in all kinds of ways, but the key to YOUR SUCCESS is drowning out the noise. So how do you drown out the haters? Listen to the podcast to find out how you can kick the haters to the curb and achieve your fitness goals.
